1. Choose the Right Vehicle
Make sure that the vehicle you choose matches your skill level. Beginners and children should start with Electric, lower speed models to learn the skill of driving before graduating to a more advanced model.
2. Learn How to Operate the RC Properly
Most quality manufacturers include very extensive operating manuals and some even include training DVDs to help you get started and operate your vehicle.
It is important that you learn how to operate the RC even if it is for your child’s enjoyment. That way you can help them to learn and supervise their use properly.
3. Follow Safety Precautions
4. Ease into it
Some models allow you to set a “training speed” on the radio which reduces the throttle and maximum speed by 50% while the beginner learns the ins and outs of operating the RC.
5. Watch and Learn
Find a local track and be a spectator. It can be a great day of family fun to go to a local race. Some local hobby shops also sponsor small-scale races on the weekend.
6. Get Outside
If you have a big enough back yard, you can have a ton of fun just racing (and running) around the backyard with the family. Get the neighbors too. This is a highly contagious sport.
7. Plan Family Field Trips
Pack up the family roadster and visit local park fields, forest preserves or empty parking lots to operate your RC. Be sure to bring a picnic too.
8. Join a Local Club
As with any sport, the more the merrier! Join a local club with like-minded people and families that enjoy the sport and have fun together.
